A message from Redwood City's Public Communications Manager
Good morning, and happy Friday!
I wanted to remind you that Redwood City’s Redwood Creek is part of the 5th annual Bay Trash Hot Spots campaign and contest by Save the Bay. If it gets the most votes by the October 22 deadline, Redwood Creek will be “adopted” and get a great clean up in 2011, courtesy of Save the Bay and its volunteers! It’s part of their "Adopt-a-Site" contest.
Go online and vote for Redwood Creek! (here’s the direct link: https://www.savesfbay.org/secure/BTHS_2010_vote?ms=eml_hot_linkbody)
I’m told that San Jose's Coyote Creek is currently in the top spot with 196 votes. Our own Redwood Creek is in second place with 130 votes. So please vote, and be sure to forward this email to others today.
Thanks.
No Downtown Jail Update
Hello "No Downtown Jail" coalition:
It’s looking more and more likely that the Sheriff will proceed with plans to build another county jail on Chemical Way, a location on the East side of Highway 101. City staff and the Redwood City City Council are working closely with the Sheriff to secure the land.
This is great news, and a victory for our “No Downtown Jail” coalition efforts! We have demonstrated how much we as Redwood City residents care about the future of our community. THANK YOU for participating in these efforts.
On October 19, the Sheriff will ask the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors to vote to authorize him to proceed with the necessary steps to purchase the land and build another county jail on Chemical Way. You can find more details in the newspaper article links provided below.
While we welcome these recent developments, we also recognize that our work is not over. It’s important to note that the downtown site has not been ruled-out as a possible site for the new jail if complications arise with the Chemical Way site.
Also, we remain concerned about the number of inmate beds identified in the proposal for the new jail, and what this could eventually mean for the number of inmates released into our downtown streets every year. We believe that questions about the number of beds and ongoing public safety issues still need to be addressed and resolved.
That’s why we will remain attentive to this process and vigilant, and why we need you to stay involved too. Make sure our community’s concerns are addressed and our voices heard. We urge you to do this by
1) urging your family, friends and neighbors to sign the virtual petition on the www.nodowntownjail.org website;
2) encouraging them to OPT-IN to get e-mail updates; and
3) joining our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=126616114056280.
As a citizens’ coalition, it’s important to show our strength in numbers – so please spread the word to your network within our community!
Thank you for your support!

Bay Image Karaoke
Since going to karaoke nights presented by Bay Image Karaoke, at the 16 mile house in Millbrae, CA back in August of this year, I sang many songs of classic rock, alternative, standards etc and having a good time while enjoying myself on stage performing. Recently this week. a bunch of us were appalled by a post, posted on the 16 mile house window, to boycott it. Why would we want to do that? To the haters/boycotters who think that karaoke is a cult, I am not going to stop singing karaoke, I'm going to continue to give my support to Bay Image Karaoke. You got a song to sing!? come on over!

Atherton Demonstration
This is the Atherton Police Department with a special message regarding a
political demonstration occurring in the Lindenwood neighborhood tomorrow, July 15. We have received information that up to 1,000 people will demonstrate tomorrow
in the area of Edge Road and Oak Grove Avenue. To accommodate the anticipated
pedestrian and vehicular traffic, we will need to close surrounding streets to
non local traffic from 11:30AM to 2:00PM.
Residents are urged to avoid Oak Grove Avenue between Middlefield Road and
Greenoaks Drive, as well as Toyon Road and Edge Road during these hours.
The Police Department will attempt to accommodate residents who wish to access
their homes on these streets, but will not allow traffic which can reasonably
use alternate routes.
The Police Department appreciates your understanding and cooperation.

Another mountain lion siting in the unincorporated Redwood City area.
Folks, there has been another mountain lion siting in the unincorporated Redwood City Area. If you are out and about during the times that mountain lions like to come out, please use caution.
At approximately 8:05 PM, 6/30, a possible mountain lion was seen in the vicinity of 3600 Block of Oak Knoll Street in Emerald Hills (Unincorpor...ated Redwood City), San Mateo County, California. If you see a mountain lion DO NOT APPROACH IT, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.
Here are a few tips:
1) Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.
2) Keep a close watch on small children.
3) If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects.
4) Pick up small children.
